Italian international Matteo Darmian was a second half substitute for Inter Milan during their Champions League last 16 second leg clash with Liverpool at Anfield earlier in the week. He played the final fifteen minutes as Inter Milan came close to rescuing their round of 16 tie with the Premier League giants.

Ex-Manchester United fullback Matteo Darmian is not a stranger to Liverpool from his time at Old Trafford. He was benched for the two legs against the Reds as Inter Milan manager Simone Inzaghi opted for a younger fullback in Dutch senior national team star Denzel Dumfries on the right side of the defence.

Matteo Darmian came on for Dutchman Dumfries in the last three minutes of the first leg as Liverpool secure a 2-0 away win to put themselves in a very good position for the quarterfinals. By the time Darmian was introduced into the game, Liverpool had scored their two goals through Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah in the space of eight minutes with the opener coming on 75 minutes. Inter Milan had earlier given a good account of themselves as underdogs and it was a little unfair that they took a 2-0 deficit into the second leg at Anfield on Tuesday.

Inter Milan needed to score goals to salvage their round of 16 tie with Liverpool, but they could only score one goal as they bowed out of the Champions League via a 2-1 aggregate defeat at the hands of their English opponents.Argentine forward Lautaro Martinez scored the only goal of the tie for Inter Milanjust past the hour mark in the second leg to get his team back into the tie. Two minutes later, strike partner Alexis Sanchez was given a red card after collecting two yellow cards and that hurt the possibility of overturning the tie for Inter Milan. Just like the first leg, Matteo Darmian was also a substitute as he played the final fifteen minutes in the place of the aforementioned Dumfries.
