MATTEO DARMIAN REVEALS ONE OF HIS CAREER’S MOST IMPORTANT GOALS

Inter wingback Matteo Darmian feels that the goals he scored for the Nerazzurri in a 1-0 win over Cagliari during the 2020-21 title race was one of the most significant of his entire career. Speaking in the official matchday programme for today’s Serie A clash with Cremonese, the 32-year-old gave his thoughts on the significance of the goal which was one of the pivotal moments on the way to the Nerazzurri getting their hands on the Serie A title race for the first time in eleven years.

Inter were well into the second half of their Serie A clash with Cagliari during April of 2021, one of their last few matches of the season and a fixture in which three points would have represented a big step towards the Scudetto, and in need of a goal from somewhere. There was no shortage of goal threats in the Nereazzurri’s team that day, but no one had managed to break through, until an unlikely scorer in the form of Darmian found the back of the net in the 72nd minute. Inter are currently in a financial crisis after their Chinese co-owner opted out of the club and they must now sell some of their stars in order to meet up with the financial standards of the Italian Serie A. They have already sold prolific right-back, Achraf Hakimi, to French Ligue 1 heavyweights Paris Saint-Germain this summer and may still lose a couple of players before this window ends. Their star forwards Lautaro Martinez and Romelu Lukaku have both been linked with possible exits but the rumors have been clamped upon by their President.

DARMIAN EXPERIMENT LASTED FOR 45 MINUTES

Italian international Matteo Darmian has had to play second fiddle to fellow new signing AchraafHakimiin the right-back position at Inter Milan. Matteo Darmian has seen little playing time in the position since the signing of Moroccan international player Hakimi. The lively fullback is widely regarded as the best right-sided defender at the moment on current form. He joined the Nerazzuri in a big money move from Real Madrid.

The Spanish giants have had to field an attacker at right-back this season to suggest that the club misses Hakimi, who would have slotted into the role with minimal fuss. Spanish international Dani Carvajal is the first choice right-back but he has not been able for manager Zinedine Zidane for a big part of this season due to injuries and the Frenchman has turned to Spanish attacker Lucas Vazquez to do a job at right-back. Lucas Vazquez has played there several times this season in the absence of Dani Carvajal. Continue reading
